Dr. Muscarella is also the president of LFM Healthcare Solutions, LLC, a healthcare quality improvement company based near Philadelphia, PA.
In 2014 Dr. Muscarella founded Discussions in Infection Control, the most replete infection control blog featuring more than 150 of his original articles.
In 1990, Dr. Muscarella received his Ph.D. in bioengineering from the University of Pennsylvania (the School of Engineering and Applied Science; Philadelphia, PA).
He contemporaneously completed a post-doctoral fellowship in diagnostic imaging at the Temple University School of Medicine (Philadelphia, PA). In 1983 he received a B.S. in physics from Ursinus College (Collegeville, PA).
From 1991 through 1994, Dr. Muscarella worked as a project engineer for the ECRI Institute (Plymouth Meeting, PA) evaluating the quality and safety of medical devices and infection control products.
From 1995 to 2013, Dr. Muscarella was the director of research and development for Custom Ultrasonics, Inc. In 1995, he founded the popular infection control newsletter, “The Q-Net Monthly,” which was published each month until 2013.
For almost two decades, Dr. Muscarella has researched and authored more than 150 articles on the topics of disinfection, sterilization, instrument reprocessing, risk management, infection control, modes of disease transmission, and factors that pose an increased risk of healthcare-acquired infections (HAIs), with a focus in the fields of gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopy and critical care.
Many of his articles have been published in such peer-reviewed medical journals as: The Journal of Hospital Infection, The American Journal of Infection Control, Gastroenterology Nursing, Chest, Nature Medicine, Infection Control and Hospital Epidemiology, Endoscopy, Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology, and the World Journal of Clinical Infectious Diseases.

In recent years, Dr. Muscarella has lectured in England, Canada, and at SGNA’s national annual conferences and its regional exhibits across the U.S., most recently at the AGA/OD-SGNA/VSG annual course, in Williamsburg, Virginia (September 6, 2014).
His research, quotes, and editorials have appeared in USA Today, The Boston Globe, Newsday, The Seattle Times (OP/ED; click here), The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, The KitSap Sun, the Winston-Salem Journal, and The Sacramento Bee, as well as on the front pages of The San Juan Weekly, The Wall Street Journal, and Investor’s Business Daily.
